Our hands are one of the most expressive parts of our body. They are integral to our work, our rest, our play, and our connections with other people. They are made from the same elements as earth, fire, water, and air, and as such, a constant reminder of our connection to nature. We use our hands intuitively every day, and amass a colossal and innate wisdom contained inside our skin. This series is an intimate collection of hand portraits belonging to loved ones in my queer, trans, and Black, Indigenous, and Person of Color (QTBIPOC) community. Each pair reflects the unique fingerprint each person reflects in my life. As I was making this series, I was struck by the radiance contained inside each set of hands, and the ever-shifting light surrounding them, a reminder of the abundance contained inside us individually and collectively.

My body of work usually consists of personal ideas and feelings within my experiences. I combine complementary or analogous colors in my pieces to create an investment between the viewer and the piece. The key concepts from most of my pieces are to speak what I cannot say with words and to connect with others who might relate to my content. I do these mostly by symbolism and abstraction, which leads the viewer to have their own interpretation of the piece. My purpose from these pieces is to generate a way for me to express myself and share it with the world, also connecting with different cultural backgrounds, spiritual connections, and even social and political commentary, regardless of language. I like to tell stories, and I like to think that my art is a way to preserve my story while it can also preserve the stories that I have to tell, my experiences, and thoughts. My inspiration and work process consist of the outside world and my interactions with people or self-reflections. Some of the artists who inspired my style have been “Louis Wain”, “David Lynch”. My art has also been inspired by the animation style from the 80s and 90s, and cartoon comics.

Faces in Everything

Humans by nature are hardwired to seek patterns. Our minds find comfort within repetition and motif. At the same time, pattern and routine are seldom consistent in our lives. With the ebb and flow of life, it is important that we honor the faces, places, and living things that gave us comfort, even if they’re gone.

Faces in Everything explores the ephemeral nature of pattern by honoring objects and faces we remember and using their memory as a tool for self-exploration.
