memento

With life, comes loss. But our ability to reflect and grow from loss is what makes our lives distinctly human. Throughout our history we have designed tools, shards of larger memories that help us deal with loss. “memento”, keepsakes, and relics are some of the names we have given to the tools we look for when we lose something we love.

These tokens of memories act as spiritual guides that navigate us through grief and serve as a reminder of our growth. It’s important not to ignore our past, but let it plant seeds for our future.

This exhibit aims to offer you a space to claim that memory towards your growth.

PNW Conceptual Art Center’s 75th Anniversary

The Pacific Northwest Conceptual Art Center would like to invite you to our 75th Anniversary Retrospective, graciously hosted by the Littman Gallery at Portland State University. We will be showing a variety of historical conceptual artworks influenced by the center, as well as contemporary artists working in the field.

The PNW Conceptual Art Center’s goal is to provide opportunities for artists and writers, and education and events for anyone who wants to learn about conceptual art and its history. We choose to operate out of a sense of abundance and believe that the making and enjoyment of art is for everyone.

Comparison • Dio Chavez

Comparison is a disease that I have fallen victim to. I see my peers excelling and creating things that I would only dream of; their skills are far beyond my own. I am unable to translate my ideas into tangible things. Every time I gain confidence in my art, I am promptly met with uncertainty: Is this good enough…Am I enough? This is the dilemma of an artist, coming to terms with creating something less than perfect.

Our hands are one of the most expressive parts of our body. They are integral to our work, our rest, our play, and our connections with other people. They are made from the same elements as earth, fire, water, and air, and as such, a constant reminder of our connection to nature. We use our hands intuitively every day, and amass a colossal and innate wisdom contained inside our skin. This series is an intimate collection of hand portraits belonging to loved ones in my queer, trans, and Black, Indigenous, and Person of Color (QTBIPOC) community. Each pair reflects the unique fingerprint each person reflects in my life. As I was making this series, I was struck by the radiance contained inside each set of hands, and the ever-shifting light surrounding them, a reminder of the abundance contained inside us individually and collectively.

An invitation to explore the ever-changing answers to these questions. To weave the threads of the parts of your experience previously compartmentalized. A forum for the omissions from our stories.

We come back to ourselves. We worship the past that brought us here and the dreams of our future. What should you carry with you? What should you set down to lighten your burden?

As we answer these questions for ourselves, we light candles for our community, illuminating the path for others. This is a place for illuminating identity, meaning, and our connections to each other, set against the blurred backdrop of the emeralds and sages of our evergreen city.
