Job Description

The Littman and White Galleries are student-run exhibition spaces at Portland State University. Our aesthetics are focused on contemporary art practices. Our programming reflects the contemporary art community by incorporating guest curators, auxiliary exhibitions, and large events taking place on campus. Our goal is to present work that challenges our audience both conceptually and visually. By focusing on emerging and mid-career artists, we aim to present burgeoning trends in contemporary art that can be accessible to anyone. We see our exhibitions as educational, timely, and contextually relevant.

We are seeking a proactive, team oriented student prepared to work in a collaborative environment. As a staff member of Littman + White, the candidate must be available to attend weekly staff meetings and work office hours. The position allows for some schedule flexibility and independent work to fulfill publicity duties. The candidate collaborates with the staff team in an inclusive decision-making process to establish weekly, monthly, and yearly goals for increased gallery attendance and streamlining operations.

The Publicity Coordinator is responsible for maintaining a positive public image and increasing the visibility of Littman + White Galleries and Portland State University. They will promote Littman + White’s exhibitions and events on the PSU campus and beyond. On a monthly basis, this may require any combination of the following (or more):

  • Consistently updating and maintaining the website and social networking accounts; Operate and expand social media presence on a daily to weekly basis, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

  • Design work (exhibition vinyl, gallery map, and posters, when applicable)

  • Updating and maintaining the galleries’ physical advertising spaces (display case in SMSU)

  • Create and send PR & outreach material on a 2-6 PR cycle, to be modified as required

  • Create and distrubute monthly newsletter

  • Regularly update PR & outreach contacts on and off campus

  • Photographic show documentation and photo editing

  • Distributing printed materials and flyers on campus

  • Collaborating across the university to promote Littman + White and our events

The qualified candidate is:

  • Familiar with contemporary marketing, including a thorough knowledge of social media and local press outlets

  • Will seek to expand, maintain and improve galleries' relationships with campus contacts, press outlets and social media users

  • Experienced with tools of modern graphic design, including Adobe Indesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop

  • Highly competent in time management and efficiency

  • Adherent to deadlines

  • A self-starter

  • Experience in photography with DSLR cameras

  • General tech-savviness, familiarity with Apple computers/software and Google Drive

  • Familiar with Instagram and Facebook

  • Innovative and progress-oriented

  • Passionate about the arts and student engagement

  • Experience with Squarespace or similar website platforms a plus

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have at least one full calendar year remaining until graduation

  • Cumulative PSU GPA 2.50 or higher for undergraduate students or 3.0 cumulative PSU GPA for graduate students

  • Earn a 2.5 undergraduate GPA or 3.0 graduate GPA for each term enrolled

  • Enrollment in and successful completion of a minimum of 6 undergraduate credits or 5 graduate credits per term (except summer)

Littman + White Galleries operates 11 months out of the year, including summer. We are closed for the month of December. Most work hours are during our gallery hours (Monday through Wednesday, 12 to 5pm and Thursday/Friday, 12 to 6pm.) Candidates should be available to work during the summer, as well as occasional mornings, evening, and weekends.
