Job Description

The Littman and White Galleries are student-run exhibition spaces at Portland State University. Our aesthetics are focused on contemporary art practices. Our programming reflects the contemporary art community by incorporating guest curators, auxiliary exhibitions, and large events taking place on campus. Our goal is to present work that challenges our audience both conceptually and visually. By focusing on emerging and mid-career artists, we aim to present burgeoning trends in contemporary art that can be accessible to anyone. We see our exhibitions as educational, timely, and contextually relevant.  


We are seeking a proactive, team oriented student prepared to work in a collaborative environment. As a staff member of Littman + White, the candidate must be available to attend weekly staff meetings and work office hours. The position allows for some schedule flexibility and independent work to fulfill management duties. The candidate collaborates with the staff team in an inclusive decision-making process to establish weekly, monthly, and yearly goals for maintenance of our aesthetic program.


The Gallery Director leads a staff of 4 - 6 student employees and interns on creating exhibitions and events that give students the opportunity to engage with contemporary art.  They help create long-term goals for our organization and ensure that Littman + White’s mission is always being honored. They maintain organization of daily operations of the galleries, including administrative coordination such as budget, deadlines, and scheduling. The Gallery Director reports to and works closely with the Coordinator of Student Operated Services to support the Galleries' operational, budgetary, personnel, and programming goals while upholding university policies and practices. The ideal candidate should have leadership experience, demonstrate an active commitment to our mission, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.  


Work Distribution


  • Manage the budget, including composing term and annual reports and 5 year plan. Track inventories, facilitate purchasing.

  • Manage files and set programming deadlines (assign dates for PR, contracts, catering requests, vinyl titles, website updates, etc.)

  • Liaise with SALP and the Student Fee Committee for budgetary and administrative functions, reporting regularly to gallery staff.

  • Work closely with Publicity Coordinator and Co-Curators to help facilitate decisions that are in the best interest of the budget, while presenting a professional image of the gallery, and supporting a positive working relationship with featured artists.

  • Establish and facilitate weekly staff meetings, helping to ensure open, effective communication among staff members.

  • Organize gallery schedule: gather staff members’ schedules and make sure open hours are staffed.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with Smith building management, on-campus student groups, and university departments; ensure the EHS and facilities related procedures are adhered to according to our Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SMSU

  • Maintain a focus on student engagement by helping to organize student-oriented programming with the Co-Curators and Interns

  • Create and manage Internship and Volunteer opportunities

  • Ensure that our team is adhering to Environmental Health + Safety and ADA requirements during all gallery operations, including install and deinstall periods.

  • Facilitates staff hiring by creating job posts, hiring timelines, and interview schedules; conduct interviews with the gallery team


The qualified candidate is also:

  • Experienced in budget management and expense tracking

  • Comfortable in a leadership role that requires a diplomatic approach to team decision-making

  • Able to handle unexpected problems with level-headedness

  • Highly competent in time management and efficiency

  • Able to adhere to strict deadlines

  • A self-starter

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to communication with students, faculty, and professional staff

  • Innovative and progress-oriented

  • Passionate about student engagement and the Arts


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have at least one full calendar year remaining until graduation

  • Cumulative PSU GPA 2.50 or higher for undergraduate students or 3.0 cumulative PSU GPA for graduate students

  • Earn a 2.5 undergraduate GPA or 3.0 graduate GPA for each term enrolled

  • Enrollment in and successful completion of a minimum of 6 undergraduate credits or 5 graduate credits per term (except summer)

Littman + White Galleries operates 11 months out of the year, including summer. We are closed for the month of December. Most work hours are during our gallery hours (Monday through Wednesday, 12 to 5pm and Thursday/Friday, 12 to 6pm.) Candidates should be available to work during the summer, as well as occasional mornings, evening, and weekends.
